Look at the pineapple on this pedestal; it is clean, protected and well presented. Now imagine a pineapple on the ground, exposed and covered in filth. Which one would you be most likely to buy and eat? Which one would you be most likely to toss aside? They may very well be twin fruits, but the difference in treatment is caused by how they are presented. If you want others to treat you with respect, you can to give the right example by treating yourself with respect and carrying yourself with dignity. Open up your chest, push your shoulders back and raise your head up.

To gain a deep feeling of pride, live according to your values. When you neglect what is important to you, you feel low and ashamed.  Taking care of what is precious to you, for example your work, your family, your appearance, your health or your finances, makes you happy. Not just be improving those areas of your life, but also by raising and refining your self-image. You need not be perfect. Be kind to yourself and forgive yourself if you do not always succeed. Another way to be kind to yourself is to allow yourself some pleasures. Bake some vanilla cookies that you love, burn a scented candle and take a hot bath after all your diligent work.

Now some people are careless or simply jerks and may treat you badly even when you do not provoke it.  Most of the time, it is simply carelessness and it someone disrespects you, for example by a rude remark, the first way to deal with this is simply to let them know that this is unacceptable. Be polite, but be firm. If the unwanted behaviour does persist, it is necessary to avoid the person. Although this may teach him a lesson, the focus is not on punishing him, but rather on protecting yourself from further mistreatment. Notice that if you consistently follow this pattern, it is rare for you to become angry in an unprofessional or unappealing way. The uglier forms of anger arise when you swallow mistreatment again and again, until one day you can swallow no more and explode. Guard your dignity on a daily basis to avoid this bitterness. Be sweet and fragrant, yet firm! Just like a pineapple.
